I can't seem to get the "show elevation" to work. Whenever I create a run, or go to a saved run and try to use the elevation feature, all I get is 0ft with no profile generation. Any idea why this is?

What area of the world are you plotting your routes?  We have a lot of world coverage, but it's not 100%.

    Where in Rhode Island?

I pulled up several mapped routes on a search of the state of Rhode Island and the only maps whose generated elevation profiles looked suspicious were the ones on the coast line.

Cranston, but I'm having the same problem with any map I open. Here's one at random: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ri/cranston/520471521

I open the "show elevation" thing, but I get no profile, no numbers. I open the raw data spreadsheet and that has the distance points, but the elevation, accumulated ascent, and accumulated descent columns are all just zeros.

Not sure, maybe it's an issue with my system?

nope, not your system, I got the same thing here and I went and opened up  a few others in your area and while a few had some elevation data, there were a also some like you shared with no data and another one that was definitely skewed by data gaps.

I opened up the topo background on the skewed bike route someone had posted and the USGS contours did not match the drastic slope shown in the elev graphic, so it looks like you just happen to live in an area that has missing or erratic elevation datapoints.

I can't help you there, sorry, but at least you know its not your fault.  Cool

    Hi!

Im also in rhode island, in the city of providence (02906), and i cannot get this to work at all.  Does the story for the person in Cranston apply to me too?

Ascent data is still missing - not in the summary box and the data in the .csv download is mostly zeros, or near zero.

Ascent data is now there, BUT:

Ascent computation is still complete nonsense. It adds an ascent whenever there is a continuous ascent of over 10 m and seems to add 10 m no matter what the actual ascent is.  On the other hand. if you download the elevation data and plot your own ascent in excel/lotus you gat a good graph and you can do your own cumulative ascent calculation.

    Example, see:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wi/birnamwood/145992556138

    "Route Info" box: min-1289 max-1742 ascent-404

Impossible because 1742-1289 = 547, more than 404, and it's an "undulating" route so the real ascent is probably about 1500 to 2000 feet.

If you plot the downloaded elevation data you see that it accumulated 4 ascents (and one descent).  It only considered the ascents that are a contniuous rise of about 50 feet, and it accumulated 32 feet (10 m) for each of these.  See:  http://turula.com/elev.gif .  This gives an ascent of  123 feet (in the download file) but it's multiplied by the 3.28 assuming erroneously that the feet is meters and converting back to feet.

So I can see what it's doing but it's complete nonsense.
