Newcastle - Wallsend Tramway circuit
A circuit from Glendale to Wallsend including the old Wallsend-Speers Point tramway. Starts at Frederick Street North at the Glendale TAFE. Walk north-east along the old Wallsend-Speers Point tramway, which is tar-sealed. The old tramway (see http://www.railtrails.org.au/trail-descriptions/nsw-and-act?view=trail&id=222) moves into the bush immediately, ascending gently to its summit in the old Gretley Colliery lands. The descent takes the walker/cyclist through paddocks at the edge of the Wallsend-Glendale road, before passing by the Gretley Colliery workings at the end of the Newcastle Link Road. Cross underneath the Link Road and walk into Wallsend. Coffee shops, bakeries and other delights are found here, before turning south through the park alongside Ironbark Creek. Follow the creek to Barney Street, then Jubilee Road, then Aries Way. Turn up the hill along the walkway a few hundred metres past Virgo Street to meet Lake Road. Follow Lake Road south-west to the entrance to Lake Macquarie Anglican College. Turn into the entrance and almost immediately turn into the bush west along the fire trail, back to the tramway. - a 6.1 mi walking route in Glendale, Australia
