HI all,

I'm a Nordic Walking instructor in Eugene OR and recommend this site to our students to find walks with the mileages and characteristics they want.

So, if other walkers head out our way, check the "walking" routes in and around Eugene, as the ones so marked will be great for Nordic Walkers using poles! That means reasonably wide sidewalks or paths, not too much traffic, lots of parks and other Nordic Walkers!

I am really excited to have found this site and am using the mapping feature to determine the walks for each day. How handy!

I am training for the 3 day breast cancer walk which is in May for me. I've been walking short distances (3-5) for several years, and have quickly upped my training so I'm doing 5-8 miles for 3 days per week, adding longer walks now on weekends, hopefully back to back. I'm most nervous about the 20 miles on the third day, and would appreciate any training help.

Also, I'm due to a new pair of sneakers-walking or running?

Any others?

Thank you! kgbensley

I recently got a dog with no leash training, and though he is quickly adapting, he isn't (I'm not) ready to try jogging yet. I've never done much walking in the past, and I was wondering if anyone had any pointers to turn it into more than just a brisk stroll for me. He's perfectly content to go for an hour, and on cooler days (80 or below) we can walk for longer without a problem. Though he is good on a leash, I need to focus my attention on him as well as traffic when we go out, so preferably something fairly simple. Lately, we've been walking about 3 miles twice a day, with each walk being an hour long. Any tips on what I can add to that?

First time on Forum, so not sure how it works, I am after some advice, last year I completed the 26.2mile Edinburgh moon walk, which I was really pleased about, but I must admit after having a blister free training schedule, I was gutted to end up with a blister by the 7th mile, so you can imagine what it was like by the end.....

Anyway unfortunatelyI think I have scar tissue from said blister on the ball of my foot, which now always starts to hurt after a few miles, today I have walked 10 miles and the ball of my foot is in agony, I can't decide if it's another blister !!

As I have two goals this year, one to do the moon walk again in June 09 and the second is to climb Mont Blanc, so please if anyone has any advice on what I can do to stay blister and pain free I look forward to hearing about it.

Yesterday I donned a backpack and walked to the shopping centre - a 6.2 km walk there & back, and probably saved a few cents worth of fuel. It costs over $1.50 a litre here at the moment and doesn't look like it'll get any cheaper.

The problem for me is the weight of the goods I can carry home, but it may also help curb my spending at the shopping centre. Does anyone else walk to save fuel?

Hi!! I'm a new walker who has joined the 50 miles in 30 days MBT walking challenge. I'm currently on day 10, and doing well. My walks are averaging 2.0 miles per day around my neighborhood.

I'm walking to lower my blood pressure. My question is, how long do I have to keep walking until I start to see some good, steady results with my BP? When my diastolic jumped to 133, I knew I had to get my keester outside and walk on a daily basis or my doctor is going to put me on antihypertensives and I don't want that. Right now, the BP diastolic (bottom number) is fluctuating between 103 and 115 after a walk. Just in case anyone needs to know more particulars, I'm 5'2", weight is hovering around 200, my BMI is currently around 36.6, and I'm 57 years old.

Today, I went to my community fitness center and did 5 miles on a recumbent bike with relative ease. No resistance and I did it in 20:21 minutes. I know that I didn't gain all this weight overnight, and it's not going to come off overnight. I don't overeat and the salt shaker stays on the shelf. Salt is not a problem. I believe this may be hereditary, as my dad had high blood pressure.

I'm just a bit discouraged because my BP doesn't seem to be responding fast enough (or as fast as I would like it.) I am measuring it several times per day, both before and twice after a walk, about an hour apart. The second pressure, taken about one hour post walk, is seeing the BP begin to rise again.

Any suggestions from anyone out there? I'm trying my best and I'm going to make my goal of 50 miles in 30 days. Thanks for any input. It is appreciated.

The weather in Minneapolis is starting to look up. Took a nice walk with the dog on Monday and was able to map it, 2.27 miles. I am now trying to walk 5 days a week with our dog, mostly in the evening once the kids are in bed. Just found this site and trying it out. I also use a device for measuring my calories and activity intensity called the Gruve. Personalized and very accurate when compared to pedometers or other devices like the Body Bugg.

I am looking forward to losing some weight and I am hoping this web site can help me to track my walks and distance.

Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong WEB site. I walk on average 50 miles per week. I walked 7 or 8 miles every day from last Tuesday through Friday. On Saturday, I walked 12 and Sunday I walked 9. On Saturday's walk, I never got tired and kept a great pace. The same was for Sunday. I have no more pain anywhere and my endurance IS at 100%. In other words, I now feel like I can do 25 miles in one shot. This morning, I did not feel like walking. I have the energy and a little bit of time for a quickie 4 miler. I just don't want to do it. That is not good. Rain is expected all week here and I might not get in another walk until next Tuesday, May 6TH.

Notes to ponder:

1) Yes, I'm in a facility that has an exercise room.

2) No, I do NOT use them.

3) No, I do not want to do strength training. I could never bulk up in the past and at this point in my life, I never will.

So it looks like I might be taking 1 week off from my walking. Is that bad? Please remember that in the past week, I walked 50 miles and have hit a new plateau where I don't get tired or feel any discomfort after 12 miles.

Note: I'm also getting bored of my area and a little scared. It's always very dark and I saw a porcupine over the weekend.

Please draw from your great experiences and let me know what will happen to me if I break for a week. How should I start back up? I just feel like I need a break.

My past week of walking:

04/22 - 6

04/23 - 8

04/24 - 7

04/25 - 8

04/26 - 12

04/27 - 9

I'm heading to San Antonio for a conference next week down by the Riverwalk; specifically, I'm at the Marriott Rivercenter, if that makes a difference.

I'm completely unfamiliar with the area, but am looking for a nice walk of around 2-miles RT as I'm new at this "walking for fitness thing". Can anyone suggest a nice route?
