I am looking into running watches. What I want is something to track distance and pace? Not worried about heart rate and all the other jazz.

on the cheap side I am considering the Garmin Forerunner 50 with foot pod.

next on the list is the Garmin Forerunner 405 or the Polar RS300x with foot pod.

One friend tells me she likes the foot pod and feels it is more accurate than GPS, because you don't have to worry about interference. However - another friend says GPS is accurate and that foot pod do not adjust to your stride.

What do you think?

So far I have made phonecalls to retail stores- have covered, without exageration, 100's of kilometres hunting spurious information on where they might be stocked.

3 emails so far to the local distributors listed on the garmin website - no response.

Now.

They have in stock a 405 and a 310.

Which is the better sports thingy and why? Essentially what would you buy?

I am aware that needs differ, so completely subjective opinions are welcome.

I'll be buying one or the other tomorrow, just need some pushing in one direction or the other.

The Garmin is easier to wear etc, but I like the phone cos the display is colour and much clearer.

BUT why do they often disagree over the distance covered? The Garmin seems more consistent, if I run the same 5mile route. BUT the Nokia will one day say I've run 4.9 miles and other day say its 5.2miles.

Which is more accurate and reliable?

Hello all,

I have a co-worker that is running in a 10 mile race with me in 2 weeks. I noticed this weekend that his running shoes are actual Merrell trail sneakers. Very heavy and not exactly designed for a 10 mile run.

I put him in contact with the running store I use that will look at his gait and fit him with the right pair of shoes. But I'm concerned that we are to close to the race for him to start using a new pair of sneakers. He'll probably run 8 or so more times before race and a total of 20-25 miles.

Is it better for him to keep using the broken-in heavy trail shoes or a lightly worn pair of running sneakers.

Thanks

I'm looking for a decent running shirt that will be used as a team shirt. There are only 2 real requirements.
1) It has to be moisture wickening

2) It has to be able to be printed on, either screen printing or digital printing.

I would also like it to be under $20 per shirt. Otherwise once I add the printing it will end up being close to $30 per shirt.

Currently I'm looking at Champion Duo-Dry shirts which are about $20 and also Augusta shirts (which I've never heard of before) and they are about $11.

Any suggestions?

Hi all

I have been thinking of going to a specialy running store to get a gait analysis for my new shoes. However the more I read the more it seems to me that with my flat feet (really, no arch at all) it's almost garanteed that I'll be told to buy motion control shoes, and there are some shoes out there clearly identified as such that I can geet right now at discounted prices on line.

My question is: Do my flat feet automatically mean I need motion control shoes? or Is it still possible that with a gait anaylisis I will get a different recommendation? The later would make it worth the trip and inflated prize at a specialy store. The former means I can get them right now and not waste time, gas and money.

In case it's relevant, I'm pretty light (120 pounds, 5 feet 7), run mostly on pavement around 25 to 30 miles per week, and I don't really notice severe over pronation when I run, although my big toe does seem to make somewhat more of an impression on the insoles of my shoe than the rest of my foot.

Any experienced input is appretiated. thanks!

Has anyone else gone from over-pronation to neutral or supination/under-pronation? Is it really possible?

I had plantar fasciitis and heel spurs about 13 years ago while running high school cross country, and have always worn some sort of stability shoe. But I recently noticed that my hips and knees were getting really sore (no pain, just soreness) during and for a few hours after running, even short runs. I took a look at my running sneakers that I bought last year (I'm a seasonal runner), and my wear pattern is strongly along the outside curve of the toebox.

I wondered if that was the cause of my hips and knees getting sore, so I took them in to the local running store. They said my current shoe (a Saucony Paramount) was a mild stability shoe, and that I should switch to a neutral shoe b/c if the Paramount was forcing my foot to under-pronate, I didn't need a stability shoe. It was about time for a new pair anyway, so I went with the Saucony Triumph, which is a neutral shoe.

Ultimately, I'll find out soon enough if the shoe/supination was causing the soreness. The thing is, though, that prior to trying the Paramount, I had a few pairs of Saucony Hurricanes, which Saucony has classified as even more of a stability shoe than the Paramount. Combine that with my old plantar fasciitis injury, and I'm pretty certain that I haven't been a neutral this whole time, or I'd have had more problems throughout the years from wearing the wrong shoes.

Is it normal for a runners stide/mechanics to switch over time? Has this happened to anyone else?

With such a wide variety of running watches on the market I would say it is near impossible to make a choice.

I think I have narrowed it down to a couple.

Suunto appear to make nice watches which with their training effect mode appear to make getting your training level right a breeze this has led me to favour the T3 but is the T4 with it's coach mode a better option.

Or would Polar be the better route to go?

I recently purchased a Garmin Forerunner 50 heart rate monitor to help
target my pace while training. Today I was running 10 miles at an
extremely comfortable pace and my monitor read close to 220. I stopped
a few times to check the accuracy and found that my heart rate, as I
expected, was around 160. By the time I finished my own measurement, my
watch hovered directly around 160.

I'm not sure how fast my heart can recover, but don't think it will
jump from 220 to 160 in a matter of 15 seconds. Considering the fact
that I'm 27, and my max heart rate is supposed to be 220-27 (193), I
think there's something wrong that the reading is anywhere near 220.

Any thoughts as to what can cause this or how to correct it?

Been running in Brooks GTS8 with no problems at all. Just changed to the GTS9. after first run (3mile intervals) developed dreadful shinsplints. Will give them a rest until it clears up and retry again perhaps on treadmill.

Anyone else experienced this?. Not good at £80 a pair!

I bought some new socks (Falk) a few weeks ago. Started running in them and they felt really comfortable. Last week I had to switch back to some older ones (asics) which happen to be more padded under the front of the foot and I now have some soreness in my shins. I don't get it because I used to use the asics socks all the time (they're a bit old now and I haven't used them in months).

I doubt the socks are the only reason my shins are a bit tight, (can those little bits of material really do that?), but I'm wondering if socks could be a contributing factor or not.

What are your experiences with socks? (sounds silly doesn't it?)

Has anyone had sock-related pains?

Which ones do you like/hate?

I started doing a bit of running about 2 months ago (a Hal Higdon programme) and for my cross-training days I like to cycle. I'm looking for a GPS watch. Would anyone happen to know if the Garmin Forerunner 205 will work for the cycling as well? I've had a look through older forums and it seems great for running but couldn't find any information on cycling with it.

Thanks in advance,

I'm a fairly light, seasonal runner. I started actually running a year ago, then did swimming this most recent winter. Now that I'm running again, I got a new pair of shoes. Ok, so that's all good...but what do I do with the old pair? They are still in pretty good condition. What do you guys do? Do you just throw them away? Is there a recycling program? Can you give them to charity? I know a lot of you burn through shoes pretty quickly, so what do you do with all your old pairs?
