i'm would like to go running as soon as I wake up, I don't want to eat breakfast and run right after so what could i eat the night before that might give me enough energy in the morning for my run, or if not maybe something small i could eat or drink and run within 10 minutes of eating. i dont run long distances 4mi is my longest but right now im only doing 2 miles because i havent ran in months and im out of shape again lol

If you are only doing 2-4 miles, you aren't burning a lot of calories, maybe 200-400, so you don't have to take on too much fuel for the run itself. Try a granola bar and some juice, or a cup of yougurt, or a piece of fruit. You might just get by with a large glass of juice. It should get absorbed fairly quickly and should get you through the run. Then have your regular breakfast after you run.

For runs up to like 10 miles I'll sometimes grab a few handfulls of Cheerios.  Yes, I eat them dry and chase them with water.  They seem to be the only food I can eat w/o having a reflux problem during my run.

For longer runs10-15 miles I like to have sushi the night before. For me, there seems to be a good combo of carbs from the rice protein from the fish that gets me through.  This seems to work out great for me and I can usually go without anything but good ol' water during those runs.  (I do consume an inhuman amount of sushi though.  One California roll will not do it.)

9.9 times out of 10  I just try to eat a well balanced meal the night before.  Rarely will I eat anything before a run and if I do it has to be a few hours before.  My once cast iron stomach is getting rusty.

(Edited for clarity of my thoughts)

    the night before...Dinner? Wink

Seriously though, 2 - 4 miles of running you will still be burning blood sugar.

I eat a peice of whole wheat toast before I run - it is about all my stomach can handle and seems to do the trick.  On a run 5 miles or longer I might take something with me but anything shorter there is no need.

You will be fasting over night so your meal the night before for such a short run is really irrelevant. After 2-4 hours your body will have digested the carbohydrates from your food and any excess will be stored as glycogen or fat. Your body will maintain your blood sugar on its own and then when you run in the morning you will mobilze stores of glycogen and fat as needed.

You don't need to eat a whole breakfast in the morning. Have you considered having a 6-8 ounce glass of 100% juice? This will give you 80-120 calories of pure sugar (and nutrients if you choose 100% fruit juice) which will give you energy for running. Something like apple or grape juice should be light on your stomach (as opposed to orange or cranberry juice).

hey thanks alot guys, yea i guess some juice should be enough, that makes sense...its just that i wake up hungry and dont like running on a completely empty stomach, but i also dont wanna eat and run immediately cuz it makes my stomach hurt so i'll try drinking a nice cup of oj or apple juice and see how that works out....it seems so obvious but yet i didn't think of it

I generally roll out of bed, into my shoes, and out the door (if I get out before I really wake up I won't be able to argue with myself), without eating. I generally go up to 9 miles without additional calories besides what I carry in my muscles and liver. I've found that I'm more prone to bonking if I try to get in a quick hi-carb meal before I head out than if I just go. For longer runs I tend to carry nutrition with me and might cram a couple of pieces of bread and a big glass of milk before I head out..... works for me!
