Circular walk from Milford Common via Shugborough Park, Trent & Mersey Canal, back to Cannock Chase
Shugborough Park Start at Milford Common car park. To reach the car park, turn off the A513 in Milford Common opposite the Barley Mow PH into Brocton Road. The entrance to Milford Common car park is 200 metres along Brocton Road on your left. Public Toilets are available on Brocton Road next to the bus stop, and tourist information centre. Walk across Milford Common towards the entrance to Shugborough Park. Cross over A513 and turn east along the road verge. Go across Holdiford Road and past the entrance to Shugborough Hall. Continue for about 270m then turn left along a public footpath uphill through woods until you reach underground reservoirs, passing these on your left. Continue ahead until you re-join A513. Turn left along verge of main road and walk for 430m, until you reach a public footpath (Staffordshire Way) leading left into the Shugborough Estate. Turn left and walk along the Staffordshire Way, through Shugborough Estate, travelling NNE; continue for about 1.35km. Do not turn left at junction towards Shugborough Hall. Continue ahead across a packhorse bridge (no vehicular traffic) crossing over the River Trent. After 100m turn right onto the Trent and Mersey Canal towpath (the way for the Millennium). (Total distance to this point 3.36km). Trent and Mersey Canal Travel SSE then SE along the Canal towpath until you reach Meadow Lane leading from Little Haywood. Go under the road bridge and turn right to leave the canal towpath. Go along Meadow Lane travelling south for 550 metres to reach the A513 again. Cannock Chase Go straight across the main road and travel uphill for 200 metres to reach the Cannock Chase car park next to BeggarâÃÂÃÂs Hill. Continue ahead through car park and take the right footpath at the end of the car park. Continue for 120 metres, then turn right again heading west towards Brocton Coppice. Continue through Cannock Chase for 1.8 km until you reach a picnic area and the stepping stones at Sher brook. Go across the river on the stepping stones, and almost immediately turn left at a path junction heading SSE. You can either take the main footpath (the Staffordshire Way), or take a winding path following Sher Brook. Eventually the two paths join up. Continue along the Staffordshire Way travelling SSE, S or SSW until you reach a path junction (Total distance to this point 9.25KM). Leave the Staffordshire Way at this point and continue ahead along public footpath in Sherbrook Valley for a further 117 metres. Turn right, and continue in a westerly direction uphill through Brocton Field to Glacial Boulder (near Glacial Boulder car park). Join the Heart of England Way near Glacial Boulder and travel in a northerly direction through Mere Valley past Mere Pits towards Milford (Total distance to this point 14.04KM). Leave the Heart of England Way and travel north along footpaths across Milford Common to reach Milford Common car park.
